As its name suggests, Žižkov is of significance in Czech history. It takes its name from Hussite warrior Jan Žižka, whose equestrian statue, on the edge of Vítkov Hill, looms menacingly over Žižkov and Karlín.
Žižkov district was originally part of the sparsely populated countryside outside of Prague. Change came through the decision of Emperor Charles IV in 1358 to establish vineyards around Prague within a radius of about free miles.
Pražačka (area name) was one of the vineyard settlements, disappear in the course of the 19th century, but it is remembered in local name.
On your way down to the centre, you can take a walk or cycle through the picturesque park on Vítkov Hill, place of famous battle in 1420. There you can visit Museum of Great History of Czechoslovakia in 19th and 20th century.
Standing on the top of Vítkov hill you get wonderful view of the whole scene of Prague downtown and it´s surroundings.
Spectacular and unforgettable magical sunset over the city would be something you don’t want to miss.
From there it’s just a quick run down straight to the city lights and the city-centre where you can meet the world.
Žižkov is one of Prague’s most accessible places to live and a very convenient destination for commuters. Much of the neighborhood is within walking distance of the city center or Vinohrady. Žižkov can also be reached be approached on foot from Karlín via the pedestrian tunnel under Vítkov Hill. Commuting by tram should take around 10 minutes or less.
In terms of public transport, trams and buses are the most convenient means of reaching our place. Currently, tram numbers 1, 9, 11 and 16 go through the area, running north-south along the arterial route of Jana Zelivskeho before going off in different directions. The number 9, a key route in the capital, runs very frequently. Night tram numbers 55 and 58 and night bus 509.
